Most of those who read this article probably don’t know that it’s World Telecommunications Day today. Communication in its various forms has always been an essential part of our existence, as fundamental as the air we breathe. Life, development, and progress are all built upon our ability to communicate.

The birth of telecommunications specifically dates back to the invention of the telegraph in the early 19th century, though modern-style telecoms were born when Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone back in 1876. Since then, the development of the internet and smartphones has made global communication easier than it has ever been before. So much so that we often take this for granted.

So let’s take a moment today to discuss how crucial it is for the global community to recognize that advancing humanity will be difficult without further advancing the very systems that enable our connectivity. We must prioritize the development of our communication infrastructure to ensure it remains robust, accessible, and capable of supporting the diverse ways in which we connect.

The shortcomings of modern telecoms

The telecommunications framework we have in place today might already seem more than sufficient for the everyday consumer, but a closer look reveals significant shortcomings. Current telecommunication systems are outdated and unable to keep pace with the rapidly evolving needs of our society.

These centralized models are plagued by high costs — most people don’t realize how affordable connectivity services could be — and sluggish expansion, leaving many without reliable access to communication networks. As such, underprivileged communities may end up with limited access to the communications services that many of us consider a basic human right.

To truly progress, we must embrace a new paradigm centered around decentralization and community empowerment. Blockchain technology and decentralized networks offer a path forward, providing secure, scalable, and equitable access for all.
